2022 NCSHLA Convention Highlights

Faculty and student representatives from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders attended the North Carolina Speech Hearing and Language Association annual convention in Durham on March 2 - 4.

Two CSD faculty, Dawn Botts and Emily Hornback, currently serve on the NCSHLA Board of Directors.  Dr. Botts serves as the Continuing Education Chair and was responsible for securing keynote speakers for the conference.  Emily serves as VP of Public Relations and University Affairs and was responsible for coordinating the activities of 25 student volunteers.

Five graduate students from Appalachian’s Speech-Language Pathology program (Shelby Corriher, Riley Davis, Rebekah Holsenbak, Lauren Northrup and Abby Priest) competed in the annual NCSHLA Knowledge Bowl. Teams from each University throughout the state were asked questions from previous Praxis exams and practice exams in a game show format in three rounds. The winner was the team with the most points over all three rounds. ASU SLP Graduate Students had a strong performance and won first place! The trophy will be displayed in the CSD department office.

Annie Bresko, an Undergraduate Honors student presented findings from her Undergraduate Honors Thesis involving the importance of training in a standardized approach to the Modified Barium Swallow Study.

Finally, members of the AppState National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Liaison from the Multicultural Concerns in Communication Sciences and Disorders [MC^2] student clubs attended the convention and served as conference volunteers. They enjoyed attending sessions and learning more about the profession through talking with graduate students and interacting with exhibitors.
