App State's Delta Zeta helps prepare the PLC Playground for students

The Charles E. and Geneva S. Scott Scottish Rite Communication Disorders Clinic at Appalachian State operates an on-campus program known as the Preschool Language Classroom (PLC). The PLC, which is staffed by Clinical Educators and Graduate Student Clinicians in the Speech-Language Pathology master’s program, serves children ages 2 to 5 who need support in developing communication skills to their fullest potential. The children are involved in group activities such as story time, art, music, play, and snack time.

The Preschool Language Classroom reopened on August 25th after being closed since March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. With the anticipated arrival of the newly enrolled children, 17 members of the Delta Zeta sorority, Lambda Phi Chapter volunteered on August 22, 2021 to clean and organize the PLC playground equipment. The toys and equipment have been unused since the closure in early 2020, resulting in the materials being dirty and in disarray. The Delta Zeta members pressure washed the sidewalk and equipment, scrubbed toys by hand, swept the mulch, weeded and edged the garden, and planted flowers and seeds in the garden, all in preparation for the upcoming Fall Semester.

Sherry Street-Tobin, the Coordinator of the PLC, and Charlotte Draper, Delta Zeta's Vice President of Philanthropy are developing plans to create a mural on the wall of the playground.  The mural will beautify the wall and create another opportunity for clinicians to stimulate communication while children are on the playground. The playground serves as an extension of the classroom, where learning opportunities are plentiful and gross-motor skills can be developed.

The PLC sends a huge thank you to Makenzie Hamrick, Lindsay Dicristo, Emma Begg, Alex Morrow, Mari-Coleman Carter, Audrey Ditmore, Faith Mangretta, Mikalya Posey, Mcewen Thorton, Sarah Grace Sweitzer, Jordan Defilipio, Maddi Walseben, Ashley Weisser, Bella Carpenter, Hadley Ladue, Savannah Bedell, Lauren Maske, and Charlotte Draper for embellishing the playground and providing the children with a beautiful learning space.
