The American Sign Language Honor Society (ASLHS) is an organization that supports a student’s curiosity regarding the Deaf community and the desire for outstanding achievements. Appalachian’s chapter of the ASLHS provides students with an opportunity to practice their sign language skills and engage with the Deaf community outside of the classroom. It also allows students to showcase their community service accomplishments by earning a cord or medals that they can display during graduation.
Recently, Appalachian’s chapter of the ASLHS viewed the Apple TV original movie, CODA, directed by Sian Heder. The movie showcases Ruby, a high school girl who is the only hearing member of her family and has been interpreting for her family her entire life. As she discovers some of her own passions, she realizes that her only identity has been as the family interpreter. She feels guilty for leaving her family to pursue her own interests because she knows that her family cannot communicate without her. As she begins to navigate her young adult life, her family also begins to learn how to navigate their Deaf life in a hearing world. CODA has received an overwhelming amount of support and awards for its performance.
ASLHS members worked together to write a detailed movie review that summarizes the story line and highlights some interesting information concerning the conception and creation of the movie.
American Sign Language Honor Society (ASLHS)
This movie review is brought to you by the ASL Honor Society chapter here at Appalachian State. The chapter was founded by Cammie Hogan and Madison Fournier with the help of our faculty advisor Dr. Greta Knigga-Daughtery in the Spring of 2021. Over the last year, we have accumulated twenty-five outstanding students that have met and maintained the requirements for participating in the club. To join ASLHS, you must be a junior or senior level student, have completed or have the intention of completing ASL III, maintain an GPA of 3.5 overall and for ASL classes, and be in good standing with the ASL club. If anyone is interested in joining ASLHS or they have any questions they can contact Dr. Greta!
