How long have you been at App State? I have been a part of the App family for almost 4 years.
What is your role in this department? I am a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Director of Clinical Education. I teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including Introduction to Clinical Procedures, Speech Sound Disorders and Motor Speech Disorders. I work closely with Bliss Hemric, Internship Coordinator, to determine clinic placements for students each semester.
What do you find to be the most rewarding, and most challenging, aspects of your job? The most rewarding aspect is helping students realize their potential and helping them meet their personal and professional goals.
What prompted you to go into this field? I wanted to be an elementary teacher and fell into this profession by accident. Once I started on this track, there was no looking back. I love this field and love helping to teach others how to communicate better.
What are your speciality areas within the field? I've worked in many different settings, school, preschool, hospital (inpatient and outpatient), and in skilled nursing. My primary clinical interest and specialty areas are speech sound disorders and motor speech disorders. Academically, I have a lot of experience in the areas of supervision and ethics. I am currently on an AdHoc committee for ASHA reviewing/updating the ASHA Code of Ethics.
What is one thing you’d like to tell your younger self, in high school or college? You can do anything that you set your mind to. Trust yourself, and do not let anyone make you doubt your self worth.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working? I love to cook, garden and play with my two golden retrievers, Cooper and Stella.
