The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) is a pre-professional program that provides students with the academic preparation and clinical exposure required for graduate study in speech-language pathology or audiology. Academic requirements include 46 semester hours of major coursework, 3 hours of major electives and 15 hours in an academic interest area. The coursework focuses on normal development of speech, language and hearing processes as well as associated disorders.
Admissions Requirements
Students are eligible to declare the CSD major once the following requirements have been met.
- complete 30 credits
- complete RC 1000 (or equivalent)
- complete or currently enrolled in UCO1200 (or equivalent)
- GPA of at least 3.2
Additional Admissions Information
Students must complete CSD 2259 and CSD 2260 with a minimum grade of "B" before they will be eligible to take additional courses in the CSD major sequence.
Declared CSD majors will be able to register for the next sequence of CSD courses prior to receiving a final grade in CSD 2259 and 2260, but they will be dropped from the courses if they do not earn the B minimum in CSD 2259 and 2260.
Undeclared CSD majors with CSD 2259 and CSD 2260 in progress may contact the department to see if they are eligible for CSD registration assistance.

CCC&TI Articulation Agreement
The Communication Sciences and Disorders program has collaborated with Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute (CCC&TI) to develop an articulation agreement. This agreement allows students with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Speech Language Pathology Assistant from CCC&TI to transition easily to the B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders program at App State.
Faculty Mentoring
Having professional advisors who work with students to understand program requirements and build a graduation plan gives Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) faculty more time for meaningful conversations with students about professional standards and responsibilities, as well as pathways to both graduate schools and careers. Of course, mentoring relationships evolve organically for many of our students and faculty both inside and outside the classroom, but the CSD program is also intentional about devoting time to these important topics in the required Professional Issues in CSD course. An additional point of contact for mentoring is the Undergraduate Program Director, Dr. Jennifer Dalton at daltonjc1@appstate.edu.
Academic Interest Area (Minor)
An Academic Interest Area consists of 15 hours of coursework, selected in consultation with an advisor, in a content area relevant to Communication Sciences and Disorders. Academic Interest Areas offer the student flexibility in the selection of specific coursework within the content area. Content areas that compliment the CSD program of study include: Child Development, Social Work, Public Health, Special Education, Gerontology, Psychology, American Sign Language, Spanish
CSD Honors Program
The CSD Honors Program recognizes high-achieving undergraduate students in the major and provides an enriched, challenging environment for these students to develop academically and professionally.
