Minor in Communication Sciences and Disorders

The Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) minor will provide you with a foundation in the anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanisms, and the normal development of hearing, speech, and language skills. This pathway is ideal for students who discover a passion for communication sciences later in their academic journey or who want to pair their major with targeted preparation for graduate study. Many students completing this minor plan to work in a field related to communication disorders, such as education or psychology.

Speech-Language Pathology

Beginning with the 2025–2026 catalog, students majoring in fields such as education, psychology, or health sciences can use the CSD minor to fulfill many of the prerequisite courses required for admission to graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP).  The CSD minor includes coursework in key areas such as language development, phonetics, and speech science, making students well-prepared and competitive applicants for graduate programs in SLP.

Students enrolled in the CSD Minor program of study, beginning with the 2025-2026 catalog, who wish to complete all of the common prerequisite coursework for graduate SLP programs may do so by taking all seven courses listed in the minor curriculum. While only five courses (15 credit hours) are required to complete the minor, students are encouraged to enroll in the two additional courses to strengthen their preparation. Students should consult with their academic advisor to determine how to incorporate these additional courses into their graduation plan.

Audiology

Students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Audiology may choose the CSD minor instead of the major, since many audiology programs do not require all of the courses included in the CSD major. The minor offers a streamlined option that still provides a solid foundation for graduate study in audiology.
