Prerequisites and Required Coursework

Prerequisites and required coursework will be determined by your status as an in-field or out-of-field students. 

This coursework is necessary so that students are eligible for state licensure and national certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) at the time of graduation.

Required ASHA Courses (Standard IV-A)

It is recommended that these course be completed by all students, both in-field and out-of-field, prior to entry into the program.

  • Biological Science (e.g., biology, human anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, human genetics, veterinary science)
  • Physical Science (should include physics or chemistry)
  • Social Sciences (should include psychology, sociology, anthropology, or public health)
  • Statistics (stand-alone course in statistics is required, research methodology courses in CSD may not be used)

In-Field Students

An in-field student is defined as a student who has completed a Bachelor's Degree in speech-language pathology that included the required prerequisite courses. A student can also be considered as "in-field" if they have completed all of the required leveling courses for entry into the Master's Degree program. For in-field students, the Master's Degree program is typically completed in 5 semesters.

Required Leveling Prerequisite Courses Completed Prior to Entry

  • CSD 2260 Anatomy & Physiology of Speech & Hearing Mechanism
  • CSD 2361 Phonetics
  • CSD 2366 Communication Development (or language development)
  • CSD 2766 Neuroanatomy and Physiology
  • CSD 3084 Acoustics and Speech Science
  • CSD 3164 Audiology
  • CSD 4662 Management of Hearing Disorders
  • Prior to entry students must provide documentation of 25 hours of supervised clinical observation
  • Depending on background additional coursework may be required.

Out-of-Field Students

An out-of-field student is defined as a student who has completed a Bachelor's Degree in a field other than speech-language pathology and has not completed the required prerequisite courses. An additional 3 semesters are needed in order to fulfill the required leveling coursework in speech-language pathology and the Master's Degree program is typically completed in 8 semesters.
